During the reign of Mufasa, as you all know, Scar’s jealousy towards his brother steadily grew over the years. When Simba was born and announced to the Pride Lands at the birthing ceremony (which is the start of The Lion King), the former heir to the throne became obsessed with becoming King. Of course, this did not bode well for the Pride Lands – not well at all, in fact.
It is revealed in Simba’s Pride that Zira is Scar’s mate. The only downfall to this is that Scar is dead – killed at the end of the prequel to the second movie. Zira – like Scar – is obsessed with ruling the Pride Lands, and her plan is formed around the prodigy to Scar, chosen by Mufasa’s brother, himself: Kovu. This all goes wrong when Kovu falls madly in love with Simba’s daughter, Kiara, and at the end of the movie, Zira commits suicide when she realizes that her plan will not succeed.
This is where Akello Amani’s plot comes in. The storyline goes that Zira and Scar were the ones that hatched the initial idea to take over the Pride Lands – however, in Akello Amani, the plot speaks of a third lioness that helped these plans into motion. Her name is Awiti and – whilst Scar and Zira were alive – she was the ‘messenger’ of the trio who did all their boring work and such. (This serves as our explanation as to why she was never mentioned in the films, because she’s an original creation of ours.)
Scar, Zira and Awiti all made a pact that “Where one of us fails, the others will rise.” This basically means that if one of them should die whilst trying to secure the Pride Lands for the group, the other remaining members should pick up where they left off and continue the plan. Now that both Scar and Zira are dead, it’s Awiti’s turn to try and claim the Pride Lands for herself, and in the memory of her dead predecessors.
She has yet to proclaim war on the Pride Lands – but there is no doubt that she won’t do this later on, when she gathers enough followers, of course.
